Features: Packet Capture

One of your biggest tools for troubleshooting network problems and increasing network security is information. Data packets, the units of information that that make up network and Internet communications, can reveal a lot about the health and security of your network. LAD's packet capture feature lets you capture as much or as little of your Internet and network traffic as you like, whether wired or wireless. With this information, you can get the nitty gritty details of what is going on on the network and see what your computer has been up to (unbeknownst to you).

LAD automatically captures data on all ports and Wi-Fi bands, if available, without you having to do a thing, with both pass-through packet capture and span/mirror capture capabilities. While you may not need to consult the captured packet data every day, this information comes in handy should a network incident require investigation, a problem with a network appliance needs troubleshooting or concerns arise that computers have been compromised by malware or spyware.

By and large, hacks are successful because they take place in the dark, where you can't see them. Packet capture, even if you only look at the data once in while, shines a light and reduces the dark spaces in your network where things can hide unseen.

Wireless Packet Capture

In addition to Ethernet packet capture on the wired network, LAD can capture packets on all three wireless bands, including Wi-Fi 6E.

LAD offers two general modes of Wi-Fi packet capture, one in which a Wi-Fi channel may be dedicated solely to packet capture and all data detected on the channel would be captured, regardless of source. The utility of this is obvious: you get all the traffic on the channel, without exception. The data collected is useful in troubleshooting and debugging connectivity issues, as well as investigating whether outsiders are trying to interfere with or intrude into your wireless network.

In the second mode of operation, a channel may be used for routing traffic and for capturing any non-LAD routed traffic detected on the channel. This mode is useful for monitoring to see if traffic on a particular channel that comes from a different source is interfering with your use of the channel. This is of particular use for channels on the oldest 2.4Ghz band, which remains a mainstay of Wi-Fi communications and is frequently congested.
